Thompson Oshiobugie Izuagie is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Chemistry, Sokoto State University, Nigeria. Thompson who hails from Okpekpe in Edo State, Nigeria, grew up in the historic city of Sokoto where he attended the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto and obtained both his B.Sc. Chemistry (2007) and M.Sc. Applied Chemistry (2012) degrees. He then proceeded to the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK where he bagged a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Studies in Academic Practice (PGCASAP, 2016) and a PhD Chemistry (2017). His PhD studies was on a scholarship by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and his thesis entitled: synthesis of Polyoxometaltes for detailed solution reactivity studies was completed under the supervision of R John Errington. Currently, Thompson is interested in researches around Sustainable Chemistry (from provision of clean water to agriculture to cleaner environment).
During his PhD studies at Newcastle University, Thompson was a participant in the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action CM 1203, Polyoxometalate Chemistry for Molecular Nanoscience (PoCheMoN). The Action involved 22 COST participatory countries as well as the Russian Federation and the Republic of Moldova as ‘Near Neighbours’ and Australia as an International Partner. As a participant, Thompson was awarded funding for the International FMOCS III – PoCheMoN 2014 meeting in Paris, a European School on Molecular Nanoscience (ESMolNa) in Spain and a Short-Term Scientific Mission in France to foster collaboration with other researchers in POM chemistry within Europe. He also served as a member of the local organizing committee for FMOCS IV – PoCheMoN 2016, which held in Newcastle upon Tyne in July 2016 and played a major part in the design, production and distribution of the Action’s final brochure in 2016.
Before joining Sokoto State University in 2013, he was a Lecturer at the Department of Natural Sciences, the Polytechnic of Sokoto State (now Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic). He also served as Assistant Secretary to the Sokoto State University Implementation Committee. Thompson has authored and co-authored several publications and has made presentations at several National and International conferences.
He is a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy and a member of some International and National professional bodies including the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN), Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON), Science Association of Nigeria (SAN) and the American Chemical Society (ACS). He has visited several countries including the UK (England, Scotland and Wales), France, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium.
He is currently the Ag. Director, Division of General Studies and Research and Development Centre, Sokoto State University, Sokoto and Secretary, American Chemical Society, Nigeria International Chemical Sciences Chapter.
When he is not working, Thompson enjoys swimming, ice-skating, socialising and travelling.
