Showcasing Chemistry as a Central Science

Festival of chemistry returned for its third unique time in Nigeria to deliver exciting and engaging science-based activities to pupils, high school students and the society at large. The 2018 program “Southern Nigeria Festival of Chemistry” had as its theme – Showcasing chemistry as a central aimed at motivating the pupils and students to pursue careers in the chemical sciences through series of hands-on experiments (see appendix 1 & 2).

The festival was held at the Civil Service Auditorium, Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. About 404 people attended the event and more than 2800 people have been reached through its online social media channel – Facebook as at December 3, 2018 (See appendix 3 & 9 for event evaluation). Participants at this program included the Commissioner for Education and Commissioner for Science and Technology in Akwa Ibom State ably represented by the Director, Educational Development Services – Mr. Idongesit Etuk and the Head, Research and Publication – Dr. Benedict Ette respectively; the STAN Chairman and its members from Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Rivers State branches; Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Chapter of the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN) – Dr. E. I. Uwah; high school teachers and university lecturers, pupils and students from different primary, secondary and higher institutions of learning within and outside Akwa Ibom State. The ACS Nigeria Chapter through successful application received grant for the program from the ACS Office of International Activities (the principal funder); other funds and support came from the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), Akwa Ibom State branch, Fortune Schools, International Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Research (ICEESR), Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN), Akwa Ibom State chapter, ACS Student chapter – University of Uyo, Melotek Integrated Services, Double Bond Chemicals and well-meaning individuals (see appendix 12).

In this report, the detailed implementation of the program which includes volunteer training, hands-on activities and exhibitions on event day, event evaluation and feedbacks by participants, funding and
support, income and expenditure as well as program outcome are captured.


The success of the event was as a result of strong support, partnership and commitment; we would like to express our sincere gratitude to American Chemical Society (ACS) especially the Committee on International Activities for the opportunity given to the Nigeria Chapter to host the program again. We also acknowledge the support from STAN, Akwa Ibom State branch, teachers and ACS student chapter
– University of Uyo, other donor agencies and contributions from Dr. Ubong Eduok (Canada) and Mr. Uwem Akpan (Msc Student, University of Uyo).
